The Skylight sub-notebook has been announced by Lenovo, this uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip, and uses Linux and not Windows, and its price is 499 dollars.
This Linux device uses the ARM chip architecture, and it is a big move away from the usual Intel/Microsoft Windows model for the computers.
The common term ‘smartbook’ is being used by Lenovo to describe the product – it is smaller than a netbook, but it’s bigger than a smartphone.
The Skylight weighs about a kilogram, and has about 10 hours of battery life. It has a 10 inch screen, and comes equipped with Wi-Fi, and 3G connectivity.
Most netbooks use Windows XP, and have Intel’s Atom processors.
However, this Skylight, even though it comes with Linux, will be customized so as to not alienate mainstream customers.
“The interface is quite easy to use.”
“Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor is becoming quite an important player in smartphones, and Google’s Nexus One handset is the most recent one to use it.”
